The Circuit Breakersgot its beginning during the 2010-2011 school year. Fifteen very talented students participated in the Bear Lake Robotics Club's after school program in the previous year. They demonstrated talent and a genuine, avid interest in robotics.
After learning about the First Lego League five years ago, I finally decided to take the plunge with this group of students. Unfortunately, I encountered a problem. One of the requirement for FLL teams was there could be no more than 10 students on a team. Not wanting to disappoint these students, I searched the school for volunteers-- parents, teachers, interns, anyone willing to help! Luckily, Mrs. Dyen, a third grade teacher and parent of one of the students, readily agreed to help. We divided the students into two groups and together, we set out on the tremendous task of researching, building, programming, and practicing in preparation for the tournament only three short months away. They worked tirelessly for hours and they certainly didn't disappoint. Today, I call these groups of students, my Dream Team...
At our first event, we were very excited and thrilled to learn that both teams won a bid for the regional competition. Our second tournament was a lot tougher but we were pleased, nonetheless, that we had made it this far. All of their hard work had paid off. We are nearing the end of the school year and I will bid these students, who have started the Bear Lake Circuit Breakers, farewell as they move on to middle school.
Next school year, we will have a brand new set of Circuit Breakers who will continue the Bear Lake legacy of hard work, perserverance, and teamwork!
